Another thank you to our reader, herewith some tips of preparing food safely.

It is very important to prepare food safely to help stop harmful germs from spreading and growing. You can take some actions to help protect yourself and your loved ones from the spread of harmful bacteria.

Wash your hands

Your hands can easily spread bacteria around the kitchen and on food.

Before beginning to prepare food After touching raw foods such as meat, poultry and vegetables After going to the bathroom After touching the bin after touching pets

Do not forget to wash your hands thoroughly too, because wet palms spread bacteria more readily. Maintain worktops clean

Before you start preparing meals, it’s important worktops, kitchen utensils and chopping boards are clean. If they have been touched by raw meat, poultry, eggs or vegetables you will need to wash them thoroughly.

You should change dish cloths and tea towels frequently to avoid any bacteria growing on the substance. Independent raw foods from ready-to-eat food

Raw foods like fish, poultry and veggies may contain dangerous bacteria that can spread very easily by touching:

other foods worktops chopping boards Knives

You should keep raw foods away from ready-to-eat meals, like salad, fruit and bread. That is because these types of food won’t be cooked before you eat them, so any bacteria that get on the meals will not be killed.

To help prevent bacteria from spreading:

Do not let raw food such as fish, poultry or veggies touch other food Do not prepare ready-to-eat food using a chopping board or knife that you have used to prepare uncooked meals, unless they’ve been washed completely first Clean your hands thoroughly after touching raw meat, fish or vegetables and before you touch anything else Cover raw fish or meat and shop on the bottom shelf of the fridge, where they can’t touch or drip onto other foods Don’t wash raw meat before cooking Wash, peel or cook veggies unless these are called’ready-to-eat' on the packaging

Check the tag

It is important to read food labels to be sure everything you are likely to use has been stored correctly (according to some storage directions ) and none of the food is past its’use by' date.

Food that goes off quickly usually has storage instructions on the label that say how long you may keep the food and if it needs to go in the refrigerator.

This kind of food frequently has special packaging to help keep it fresh for longer. But it is going to go off immediately as soon as you’ve opened it. By way of instance, you may see’eat in two days of launching' on the tag. Use by dates

You will also see’use by' dates on food that goes off quickly. You should not use any food after the’use by' date, even when the food looks and smells nice, because it might contain dangerous bacteria. Best before dates

If this date runs out, it does not mean that the food will be harmful, but its own flavour, colour or texture might begin to deteriorate.

After this date the quality of the egg will deteriorate and if any salmonella germs are present, they can multiply to high levels and could make you sick.

If you plan to use a egg after its best before date, be sure that you only use it in dishes at which it will be completely cooked, so that both yolk and white are strong, such as in a cake or as a walnut.
