Another thank you to our reader, herewith some tips of preparing food safely.

It’s very important to prepare food safely to help stop harmful germs from growing and spreading. You can take some actions to help protect yourself and your loved ones from the spread of harmful germs.

Wash your hands

Your hands can easily spread bacteria around the kitchen and on food. It’s important to always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water:

Before beginning to prepare food After touching raw foods such as poultry, meat and veggies After visiting the bathroom After touching the bin after touching pets

Do not forget to wash your hands thoroughly too, because wet palms disperse bacteria more easily. Maintain worktops clean

Before you start preparing meals, it is important worktops, kitchen utensils and chopping boards are all clean. If they’ve been touched by raw poultry, meat, vegetables or eggs you will want to wash them completely.

You ought to change dish cloths and tea towels frequently to avoid any bacteria growing on the material.

Raw foods like fish, poultry and vegetables may contain harmful bacteria which can spread quite easily by touching:

other foods worktops chopping boards Knives

You ought to keep raw foods from ready-to-eat meals, such as salad, fruit and bread. This is because these types of food won’t be cooked before you eat them, so any bacteria that get on the food won’t be killed.

To help prevent bacteria from spreading:

Don’t let raw food such as meat, fish or vegetables touch other food Do not prepare ready-to-eat food using a chopping board or knife which you’ve used to prepare raw food, unless they’ve been washed completely

Buy raw fish or meat and store on the bottom shelf of this fridge where they can’t touch or drip onto other foods

Wash, peel or cook veggies unless these are described as’ready-to-eat' on the packaging

Examine the tag

It is important to read food labels to make sure everything you’re likely to use has been saved properly (according to some storage instructions) and none of the food is past its’use by' date.

Food that goes away quickly usually has storage instructions on the tag that say just how long you can keep the food and if it must go in the fridge.

This kind of food often has special packaging to keep it fresh for longer. But it will go off quickly once you’ve opened it. This is the reason the storage instructions also tell you how long the food will maintain when the packaging has been opened. By way of example, you may see’eat within two days of launching' on the label. Use by dates

You should not use any food after the’use by' date, even if the food looks and smells fine, because it may contain dangerous bacteria. Best before dates

The’best before' dates indicated on most foods are more about quality than safety. If this date runs out, it does not mean that the food will probably be detrimental, but its own flavour, texture or colour might start to deteriorate.

An exception to this can be eggs, that have a best before date of no more than 28 days after they are laid. After this date, that the quality of the egg will deteriorate if any salmonella bacteria are found, they could multiply to high levels and could make you sick.

If you plan to use a egg after its best before date, make certain you only use it in dishes where it will be completely cooked, so that both white and yolk are solid, like in a cake or as a hard-boiled egg.
