Your hands can easily spread bacteria around the kitchen and on food.

Before beginning to prepare food After touching raw food like meat, poultry and veggies After going to the toilet After touching the bin after touching pets

Don’t forget to wash your hands thoroughly as well, because wet palms spread bacteria more easily. Keep worktops clean

Before you begin preparing meals, it’s significant worktops, kitchen utensils and chopping boards are all clean. If they have been touched by raw poultry, meat, vegetables or eggs you’ll want to wash them completely.

You ought to shift dish cloths and tea towels frequently to avoid any bacteria growing on the substance. Independent raw foods from ready-to-eat food

Raw foods like meat, fish and vegetables may contain harmful bacteria that can spread very easily by touching:

other foods worktops chopping boards Knives

You should keep raw foods away from ready-to-eat meals, such as salad, bread and fruit. This is because these kinds of food will not be cooked before you eat them, so any germs that get onto the food will not be killed.

To help prevent bacteria from spreading:

Do not let raw food such as meat, fish or veggies touch other foods Do not prepare ready-to-eat food using a chopping board or knife which you’ve used to prepare raw food, unless they have been washed completely first

Buy raw fish or meat and shop on the bottom shelf of this fridge where they can’t touch or drip onto other foods Don’t wash raw meat before cooking Wash, cook or peel vegetables unless these are described as’ready-to-eat' on the packaging

Check the tag

It is important to read food labels to make sure everything you’re likely to use was saved correctly (based on any storage instructions) and none of the food is past its’use by' date.

Food that goes away fast usually has storage instructions on the tag that state how long you may keep the food and if it needs to go from the refrigerator.

This kind of food frequently has particular packaging to help keep it fresh for longer. But it is going to go off quickly once you’ve opened it. That is the reason the storage instructions also tell you how long the food will maintain when the packaging has been opened. For example, you might see’eat in two days of launching' on the tag. Use by dates

You’ll also see’use by' dates on food that goes off quickly. You shouldn’t use any food after the’use by' date, even if the food looks and smells nice, since it might contain dangerous bacteria. Best before dates

If this date runs out, it does not indicate that the food will probably be harmful, but its flavour, colour or texture may start to deteriorate.

An exception to this is eggs, that have a best before date of no more than 28 days after they are laid. After this date the quality of the egg will deteriorate if any salmonella bacteria are present, they can multiply to high levels and could make you ill.

If your plan is on using a egg after its best before date, be sure you only use it in dishes at which it’s going to be completely cooked, so that both white and yolk are solid, such as in a cake or as a walnut.
